The Joan R. Borders Rolling Readers Endowment Fund: Continuing a Lifelong Legacy

In 1997, Joan Borders, along with several friends, founded Rolling Readers Space Coast, a nonprofit literacy organization uniting Brevard’s elementary-aged children with books and caring adults to promote a community of lifelong readers. Starting in just five schools, Rolling Readers Space Coast expanded its impact and now serves more than 20 elementary schools and has reached more than 110,000 children. Through trained volunteers, Rolling Readers helps develop children’s desire to read, improve reading skills, grow imaginations, and make a lasting impact on their lives.

Upon its 15th anniversary, Joan took steps to ensure Rolling Readers’ mission continues by establishing the Joan R. Borders Rolling Readers Endowment Fund. This designated fund at the Community Foundation makes continued giving easy for donors and ensures endowed funding for Rolling Readers Space Coast forever.

“Reading offers so much: it’s a doorway to fun, adventure, possibility, and more critically, it’s a skill everyone needs to navigate our world and become a productive, engaged citizen. I invite you to join me in ensuring all of our children have access to books that captivate their minds and fuel a successful life.”

Joan and her husband Charles R. (Bob) Borders, Jr. and their family relocated to the Space Coast in 1956, and have enjoyed and given back to the community ever since. With an ongoing passion for learning, nature, education, community service, and of course reading, Joan hopes others will join her in building the endowment to inspire a lifelong love of reading, promoting literacy, creativity, and lifelong success for generations to come.
